JJ Keigley, Mike Best, and Roger Wilhelmi, W. Chicago, Batavia, and Geneva residents, share their stories and experiences from their combined 135 years of working on the railroad. Be ready for an entertaining and informative session and for Mark Ilanuza's photos.
At the end of the video, JJ Keigley, an immensely popular Metra conductor for 17 years, is shown being honored on ABC 7 Chicago’s program, Windy City Live, “Chicagoans you need to Know”. Metra honors JJ by naming the UP West Corridor the “JJ Keigley Corridor” - a very moving ceremony.

How
"Oh What A Ride on The
Rails Came to Be?

While on the train platform in Geneva, IL, I noticed 3 men seated on the patio at the 3rd Street Station Bar & Grill. As freight trains roared by, these men stood up and raised their beer glass saluting the engineer (and I learned later, also the flag displayed on UP's diesels) .

Curious, I engaged them in conversation and learned they were retired railroad workers.

Over the months, they allowed me to join them from time to time for their 'Thirsty Thursdays' get together.

I enjoyed hearing their stories which prompted to me to ask: "Has anyone recorded your stories?" When they replied "no", I offered to do so.

"Oh, What a Ride on the Rails" provided them with the opportunity, in an informal setting, to talk about their railroad experiences with one story or experience begetting another.

Just in case your curious, their stories were recorded in one take with no editing.
