Robert saw his first train before he was 5. He rode trains frequently during his life and especially as  CEO of Pullman Co. - the largest manufacture of railroad cars. 2

Robert flunked Harvard's entrance exam resulting in one year in a New Hampshire preparatory school. 3

 

That year along with 4 years at Harvard transformed him into a "Yankee". 3

 

He studied at Harvard at the same time his father served as President.3

 

 

Robert interrupted his studies to accompany his father, now President-Elect, to Washington D.C. 5

Robert's father was gone frequently for work and for politics. He felt the burden of being the oldest child.
